ICYMI: Timken: A nuclear Iran would pose an unacceptable threat

“There are so many disastrous things happening with the Biden administration’s domestic policy agenda – reckless spending, higher taxes, instituting a Green New Deal takeover and more – that we are often not hearing about the international policies that Biden is unraveling.

None are as consequential as Biden’s steps to return the U.S. to Obama’s disastrous 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran laughably claims its nuclear technology is needed for civilian purposes, and not for destroying our American way of life and greatest partner and ally in the Middle East, Israel.

President Trump was right to withdraw from the JCPOA and take on Iran from a position of power. Instead of capitulating to Iran, Trump showed the necessary strength by introducing the most robust economic sanctions that have ever been placed on the regime. The Trump administration labeled the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization for the first time, weakened Iran’s economy and ability to act, and showed unshakable support for our ally Israel, encapsulated with his move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The Trump administration even organized a coalition of Middle Eastern states together under their opposition to Iran, a move culminating in the historic Abraham Accords.

Unfortunately, we are now seeing Biden and the same swampy politicians that oversaw the Biden/Obama foreign policy failures strip back the incredible successes implemented by President Trump, leading to an emboldened Tehran government and a volatile Middle East.

So how can Americans trust that Biden and his administration will hold Iran accountable if the U.S. reenters the agreement?

Obama’s own Defense Secretary Bob Gates famously said that Biden “has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue” in his tenure.

America – and Israel – cannot afford Biden being wrong again when it comes to rejoining the Iran Nuclear Agreement. An Iran armed with nuclear weapons would pose an unacceptable danger to Israel and the United States.

Biden needs to understand – we cannot coddle the Iranian regime. We must commit to a strong path forward. The only thing that rogue nations understand is strength. President Trump knew this, but if history is any indication, Biden does not.

In the Senate, I will seek to build on President Trump’s historic achievements that brought peace, stability and economic prosperity to the region. I will always work to protect and strengthen our ties with Israel, our greatest democratic partner in the Middle East. I will never apologize for keeping America and our allies safe.”
